This Week In Astrology – Dec 16-22, 2012

Cafe Astrology

First Quarter Moon on Thursday, December 20th, 2012, at 12:19 AM EST.

Early Thursday, the First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Sagittarius squares off with the Pisces Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began at the New Moon last week is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 28 degrees and 44 minutes of Pisces square 28 degrees and 44 minutes of Sagittarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 27 to 30 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) and approximately 0 to 1 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern Time)

The Sun is in Sagittarius until December 21st, when it enters Capricorn; Mercury is in Sagittarius; Venus is in Sagittarius; Mars is in Capricorn.

The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 21-December 21. With the Sun in Sagittarius, our focus shifts from the need for an intimate connection with a person and with ourselves, to the desire to reach out to the world and connect with something larger than ourselves. While the Sun moves through this fiery, mutable sign, we can take steps to increase our understanding and awareness of the world around us. We are more able to muster up the courage to expand our horizons and branch out into new ways of thinking. We can gain more confidence and optimism by focusing on the “big picture” as we move away from our focus on the details of mundane existence. Although we may be prone to overdoing our expectations, we have the opportunity to nurture our faith, hope, and vision under this influence.

The Sun is in Capricorn from December 21-January 19. We are motivated by feelings of responsibility, ambition, and respect for law and order. Capricorn derives much satisfaction in completion and accomplishment. Standards, structures, and an appreciation for order are Capricorn themes. Capricorn wants tangible results, knows what is feasible and what is not, and is most comfortable working within an established framework and known boundaries or limits. Working towards a long-term goal is most satisfying with this influence.

Mercury is in Sagittarius from December 10-31. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now.

Venus is in Sagittarius from December 15-January 8. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy shifts from intense to buoyant. Sagittarius, of course, has its intense moments, considering it is a fire sign. However, its energy is considerably less focused; and, while Scorpio is most concerned with intimacy with a specific person, Sagittarius’ love is of a more universal kind. Romantic adventures, as well as a straightforward–even blunt–approach to love, are on the agenda. Gone are the intricacy and complexity of Venus in Scorpio. Truth and higher meaning are things that take priority with Sagittarius.

Mars is in Capricorn from November 16-December 25. Mars in Capricorn is deliberate, persistent energy. We consider the future and the consequences before taking action during this cycle. Our energy is reliable and faithful. We are slow to anger, but can be quite cold if we are frustrated. The shadow side of Mars in Capricorn is rigidity.

Saturn entered Scorpio on October 5, 2012 and will transit the sign until 2015. Read about Saturn’s transit through Scorpio here.

Jupiter is in Gemini from June 11th, 2012 to June 25, 2013. Read about Jupiter’s transit through Gemini here.

Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.

Romance & Relationships

Venus is in Sagittarius from December 15-January 8. Moving from Scorpio to Sagittarius, romantic energy changes from intense to buoyant. Truth and higher meaning are focal points for Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius is forward-looking, not very specific, outgoing, and energetic. Freedom is most important in our love relationships now. We take a happy and enthusiastic approach to love, and we might find too much intensity or seriousness depressing. We have a taste for the exotic as well as for adventure with Venus in Sagittarius. The shadow side of this position is restlessness, the inability to “settle down”, and endlessly searching for something bigger and “better”.

This week: On Sunday, we could experience some emotionalism due to expectations that may be (way) off the mark. We might entertain overly idealistic views of a person or relationship, and when they/it fails to measure up, we can feel quite disappointed. Avoid misleading whether you intend to or not. Tuesday and Wednesday brings progressive energy to our relationship patterns. We are open to new or alternative ideas and we are a little bolder when it comes to expressing ourselves. While this Venus-Uranus energy is usually detached, a parallel between Venus and Pluto at the same time heats up feelings. Themes of trust can emerge now. Thursday brings some challenges in the relationship department, as we can shy away from commitment and even regular expressions of love. There can be some fear of making an emotional investment in a person or a relationship at this time. By Saturday, we are raring to go emotionally, and possibly too much so – in our enthusiasm, we could expect or promise more than is realistic. However, the mood is generally fun and adventurous in love at this time.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Sagittarius December 15-January 8. A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.
Venus square Neptune December 16. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit–a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The “highs” of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying “lows” are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment.
Venus parallel Pluto December 18-19. The desire for drama and intensity in relationships is with us. Love feelings and relationship issues can be all-consuming now, assuming more importance in our lives than usual. Interactions with others are intense now, and themes of sharing and trust dominate in relationships.
Venus trine Uranus December 19. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements. We are ready to experiment, but not necessarily ready to commit.
Venus square Chiron December 20. Not a commitment-friendly transit. We are somewhat fearful of investing ourselves emotionally in a relationship.
Venus opposition Jupiter December 22. We are easily bored with the everyday responsibilities and routines of our love lives, and are now inclined to dramatize our lives. As a result, our love natures are strong, but insatiable. We may overstate our feelings as we temporarily overvalue someone; or we face challenges in our relationships due to overblown expectations. We are itching for adventure and fun, but the wisest course of action is to avoid ignoring our responsibilities (and reality) in our efforts towards self-gratification.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here, and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period, or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.

The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:

Void-of-course Moon on Monday, December 17th, from 1:12 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:48 PM EST.

VOC Moon on Thursday, December 20th, from 12:19 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries at 2:44 AM EST.

VOC Moon on Saturday, December 22nd, from 7:57 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:26 PM EST.

This Week’s Calendar

MercuryMars Mercury semi-square Mars. We are quick-witted and ready to argue under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions, as we feel pressure to get things done quickly. We are inclined to be snappy and irritable, and we may too easily interrupt others rather than listen. Conflicts of interest are likely.

VenusSquareNeptune Venus square Neptune. The same goes for finances–what appears to be a great buy is likely to turn out to be a financial drain or money pit.

MercuryoppositionJupiter Mercury opposition Jupiter. In an attempt to attach greater meaning to our thoughts and ideas, we may exaggerate, overstate, or overestimate. We strive to find both meaning and purpose to our lives. However, it is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can focus.

MarsSesquiquadrateJupiter Mars sesquiquadrate Jupiter. Although we may have much enthusiasm for life and for new projects, over-confidence and over-estimation of what we can do is likely. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly.

VenustrineUranus Venus trine Uranus. We lose our fear of taking risks at this time, and we happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements as well as financial undertakings. We are ready to experiment, but not ready to commit. Creative inspiration can be had. We have an offbeat, pleasant attitude and people are more willing to socialize. A good time for financial undertakings involving electronics, technology, the internet, metaphysics, and the arts, as well as group activities.

VenusChiron Venus square Chiron. Blocks to intimacy, learning from one another, and commitment can be experienced now. Insecurities on a social level can be magnified.

SunsextileNeptune Sun sextile Neptune. We’re at the right place at the right time, probably because our hunches are more likely to be correct and we are “tuned in”. We are inspired, and charitable acts now will serve to lift our spirits like no drug can. A good time for self-improvement programs or efforts. Instinctual judgment is enhanced under this influence. We are able to see matters, and people, from a different perspective–one that allows for, and even finds beauty in, differences.

JupiterSaturn Jupiter quincunx Saturn. Whether to feel optimistic about the future or to be pessimistic, it’s hard to say right now. When we feel confident, something undermines the feeling. If we think too cautiously or negatively, we don’t feel right either. This is an ambivalent energy.

Venusopposition Venus opposition Jupiter. The love nature is strong, but given to extremes. Over-inflated expectations and the tendency to overstate our affections are things to watch out for. We may overvalue something (or someone), perhaps in order to add more drama to our lives, or to feel bigger than life. We are sociable, in the mood to party, dramatic, extravagant, and inclined to overindulge as a result of this inner discontent and desire for more from life than daily routines.

What’s In Store By the Stars – Daily Astrology Trends

(as featured on our site’s main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)

December 16
The Moon is in progressive, altruistic Aquarius all day. This morning, a semi-square between Mercury and Mars can speed up our thoughts, speech, and temper. We are quick-witted and possibly ready to argue under this influence. We may be working under stressful or hectic conditions, as we feel pressure to get things done quickly. We are inclined to be snappy and irritable, and we may too easily interrupt others rather than listen. Conflicts of interest are more likely now. Early afternoon, Venus squares Neptune. Relationship ups and downs are possible now, as it is a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. We need to be careful not to set ourselves up for disappointment. The same goes for finances–what appears to be a great buy is likely to turn out to be a financial drain or money pit.

December 17
The Moon is in helpful, progressive Aquarius until 7:48 PM EST when it enters Pisces. Cooperative energy is with us early afternoon when the Sun and Moon form a sextile. Mercury opposition Jupiter this afternoon is a forward-looking energy, as we tend to think in big terms and give others the benefit of the doubt. In an attempt to attach greater meaning to our thoughts and ideas, we may exaggerate, overstate, or overestimate, however. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. It can be challenging to focus our minds, but if we manage to, we can make some clever advances.

A void of course Moon occurs from 1:12 PM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to the Sun), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:48 PM EST.

December 18
The Moon is in Pisces all day. We tend to stray from our regular routine under this influence. With Mars in hard aspect to Jupiter today, we are likely to be very enthusiastic, but we can be over-confident and could over-estimate what we are capable of doing. We are ready and willing to fight for our beliefs, and in fact might be hot-headed. We may be excitable and competitive. Jumping ahead without considering the consequences can be costly, however.

December 19
The Moon is in creative, receptive Pisces all day. Venus trines Uranus today, and life seems to speed up just enough that we have more courage to take some small risks with our hearts. We happily embrace all that is new, unusual, and out-of-the-ordinary with regards to romantic involvements as well as financial undertakings under this influence. We are ready to experiment, but not ready to commit. Creative inspiration can be had. We have an offbeat, pleasant attitude and we are more willing to socialize. This can be a good time for financial undertakings involving electronics, technology, the internet, metaphysics, and the arts, as well as group activities. The Moon and Mars support each other today, further increasing our confidence and courage.

December 20
The Moon leaves the sign of Pisces at 2:44 AM EST, when it enters action-hungry Aries. This may be a challenging day with Venus square Chiron distorting our perception of value and Jupiter quincunx Pluto, a longer-term influence that comes exact today that can stir up questions about our sense of meaning or faith. Blocks to intimacy, learning from one another, and commitment can be experienced now. Insecurities on a social level can be magnified. We may need to make some adjustments that relate to a shift in our beliefs or morals, possibly regarding past mistakes, neglect, or excess. Something could surface that has us questioning our own morals or our faith in a system or in ourselves. The solution is unlikely to be obvious at the moment, so that we could feel aggravated and bothered.

A void of course Moon occurs from 12:19 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to the Sun), until the Moon enters Aries at 2:44 AM EST.

December 21
December 22

A void of course Moon occurs from 7:57 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Mars), until the Moon enters Taurus at 1:26 PM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:

When the Moon is in Aquarius

MoonAquarius Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.

The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.

When the Moon is in Pisces

MoonPiscesWe are not inclined to want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It’s a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.

The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.

MoonAriesWe’re motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to start something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.

The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.

When the Moon is in Taurus

When the Moon is in…Transits of the Moon through the Signs.

This Week’s Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends):Sun in Sagittarius You’re now embarking on a trek into a land of dreams – not passive daydreams, but vibrant visions of what may be. The time has come to stop looking at the world as it is and asking why. Now’s the time to imagine the world as it could be, and the question has become: “Why not?” You also cannot do everything you imagine now, but you cannot do anything you don’t KNOW you can do – so believe, and dare to make it happen! This means expanding your mind, your belief system, your whole base of knowledge and experience. Time’s a wastin’ – let no grass grow between your toes!

Sun in Capricorn You see what’s wrong and you know what to do now: the time has come to make it real, and it’s a lot bigger than any one person. This means cooperation and organization, authority and discipline, responsibility – and all these things are what it takes to get you where you know you must go. But take care! If your vision is only for yourself, what you create cannot last: it must be for some greater good. Ambition, practicality, and achievement are admirable, but they are means to an end – not ends in themselves.

Mercury in Sagittarius A time of expanding your mental horizons is at hand. Religion, philosophy, law, and education are some of the things that may have special importance for you now. Being in touch with  faraway people and places satisfies an intellectual yearning – curiosity will take you anywhere and maybe everywhere.

Venus in Sagittarius A yearning for adventure and far horizons stirs in you now. To roam, to wander and wonder, to seek freedom and go where no one has gone before – these things are deep and powerful longings. A time of romantic crusades, a universal love that might not be too particular.

Mars in Capricorn With this new cycle taking hold in your life now, taking charge and being in control become more important issues for you. You want to get things organized, and you have the initiative to do it. This is a time of ambition and responsibility, a time to keep your cool and pace yourself. Working hard is smart, but working smart is better.

Jupiter in Gemini Facilitating the transfer of ideas and information takes on a special priority for you now. Writing, studying, and communicating play a bigger role in your life as a result. The belief that well-informed people will make the right decisions becomes an article of faith. Just remember: sometimes people know the right thing to do and STILL do something different!

Saturn in Scorpio This new cycle signals a need to recognize that there are powers beyond your control, that things are not what they seem on the surface. Trying to stay in control and on top only sets you up for a fall. There is a need for the resources of others. Failure to recognize this and deal with it can stop you in your tracks.

Uranus in Aries
A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.

Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?

Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
